We all called this one. Everyone knew that at some point MTV Games would see how ell Guitar Hero 3 was selling on the Wii, and say " Crap, we need to do the same thing." Personally I thought this would have happened sooner. I betted around February, because it launched on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in November, pulling along a crappy PS2 version in December. Well Wii friends, guess which port we get? If you said PS2, just like Okami and RE4, you are right. But the difference is those were good games to port, because they were good games to begin with.
Now the Rock Band that we are seeing here, is the stripped down, bare bones PS2 version. It has no online play, downloadable content, or no World Tour mode, which is the meat of the game in the 360, and PS3 version. It lets you create a band, make characters, and travel across the world getting famous. It's like Guitar Hero 3's story line, with the addition of being able to create your own character. Now then, that sounds like a cool mode. Well thats all gone in the Wii version.
So my question here is why bother to port the game. If you are going to port it, port there 360 and PS3 version. I also have an answer to my question. Its the casual audience. They do not care if they can get more songs, because they do not know it is possible. Same with online play. What about World Tour mode. Well go to a soccer mom, and ask if she wants World Tour mode in Rock Band. If she does not beat you up after you ask, then she will most likely say " Whats that, I just want to play the songs." That is about what 80% of people think when they buy Rock Band for Wii. That leaves us hardcore gamers feeling left out.
Now will I buy it? No, I'll go buy the 360 version, because of the added features. The game also gets five new songs, probably to compensate for having to downloadable content. But the game is still good, and if you just wanna play some songs, then pick the game up. My point is not to bash the game. I actually like playing Rock Band. I just wish developers would add these features to Wii games, when they clearly know the Wii is capable of them.
Oh and did I mention your GH3 guitars are not going to work with this game?
